Dylan Edwards was chosen as the Derby Spotlight Athlete of the Month for December. Edwards was an all-state, all-league and All-VYPE running back this year.
He was also voted the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year.
“It’s a great feeling, not just for me but for everyone around me,” Edwards said. “I feel like every award I get and receive I could not do by myself. I am very blessed and grateful.”
Derby lost to Blue Valley Northwest in the 6A championship game, but Edwards still felt like the season was a success.
“Although our season did not end how I wanted it to, I was very happy with how far the team and I had come,” Edwards said.
Edwards has raw ability that cannot be taught, but there were also some things he has improved on while being the feature running back for the Panthers.
“Over the past three years, I think I’ve improved on my on field vision,” Edwards said. “Reading my blocks is one thing I’ve learned over these years and it helps me a lot.”
This offseason, improving his build is a top Edwards’ priority list.
“I would like to improve on getting bigger and stronger,” Edwards said. “But that comes with time. I just want to work on my craft as much as possible so my senior season can be one to remember.”
