Larry Thomas: Derby High School Coach of the Month

By Ember McElrath

Larry Thomas, Derby Coach of the Month, has been coaching for the past 15 years. He started coaching with the special-needs students in the Derby Panther Pals program. He is currently in his fifth year coaching basketball for the sophomores or C-team and assisting the head coach as well.

“I am honored to be awarded Coach of the Month,” said Larry. “It must mean people think I am doing the right thing.”

Not only does Larry coach during the school year, but he also helps coach with the summer boy’s team in June, as well as girl’s basketball.

“The summer program is a very fun experience helping our players get better for the upcoming season,” said Larry. “We get to build relationships with kids that potentially could come through the program.”

This season Larry is looking forward to being able to practice and play as much as they possibly can while still remaining healthy. Getting to spend so much time with his coaching staff is also a huge plus for this coach, as they are a very close group.

“Just being able to meet with my team and practice is a blessing,” said Larry. “Some people are not able to do even that.”

Growing up Larry played basketball, baseball, and started playing football once he entered high school. Larry attended Bishop Kelly High School and went on to attend Butler Community College in 2002. Larry is currently working to finish his bachelor’s degree in special education.

Larry has been married to his wife for 17 wonderful years. In his free time he enjoys playing pick-up basketball and spending time with his friends and family.

There is an obvious love for the game for Larry, but it all comes down to helping kids for him.

“Helping kids learn to play the game and building relationships with them that last a lifetime.” Larry said.
