Derby soccer players Bianka Schultz recently spoke to VYPE in an interview.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goals for the year are to be a leader for the team and continue to be a good team player whether that be giving people assists, goal scoring, or encouragement.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory is my sophomore year where I scored a header against Andover who we usually struggle against and tied 1-1. I remember the whole team getting hype and celebrating after since it was a pretty good victory to us.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
I believe the teammate who has left the biggest impression on me is either Kirsten or Annette who formerly played for Derby as well. Kirsten pushed me to be better and was always positive in everything she did. We practiced against one another outside of practice as well to push ourselves to be better overall. Annette really helped me when I was hard on myself and was really good at motivating me and getting me back into the right headspace.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part about being on this team is forming new or stronger bonds with the girls each year and growing as a team. It’s a great environment and I love everything about the program whether it’s the players or the coaches.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I played previously with several club teams, the last being Fc Wichita’s ECNL team. I now focus on college however as I’m a part of Butler’s Early College Academy and will be getting my Associates degree in business this May. I’m also pretty busy with work as my parents own several businesses that I help maintain.
VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?
My sport has taught me several things including good worth ethic. It has also given me good leadership skills, resilience, and self-discipline that apply to my everyday life. These qualities are all crucial both in and out of the sport.
VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?
The best advice anyone has given me is to always see the good in things. Once you start focusing on the negatives they consume you. Your best is good, and be purposeful with your actions.
VYPE: Who inspires you and why?
My teammates inspire me because they drive me to push myself harder. I believe when you do things for not only yourself but your teammates you push yourself harder and hold yourself to a higher standard. I also really appreciate having Coach Burke as a head coach and coaching me on varsity throughout my 4 years of high school and developing me as a player.
