Q&A with Derby’s Diego Gaunu – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Door Rescue

Derby wrestler Diego Gauna spoke with VYPE is a recent interview.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

Some personal goals are to win state individually and repeat as a team. Also to get 40+ wins on the season.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory was last year winning a team title. It allowed me to be apart of one of the best teams in Derby wrestling history.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

A teammate that left the biggest impression was Braden Tatum who was a senior last year and he was really just a great mentor and leader towards me he always worked hard and even pushed myself to get better.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part about being on this team is how a lot of the guys don’t give up we are the toughest team in Kansas and I think will shock a lot of people when state rolls around.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

Community service no, but I am always around the younger wrestlers helping out trying to inspire them to be great and better themselves.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I’m involved in South Central Punishers and Derby Wrestling Club I mainly just help out with coaching for derby but I wrestle for Punishers just because I feel that is where I started to become a great wrestler.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

That even though times can be rough things are going to get better and you can always count on your closest people to be there for you.

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

Keep going, it might not seem like you’re succeeding right now but succeed is right around the corner.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

My parents inspire me everyday because they are the one putting food on my table and clothes on my back they work their tail off for me and my brothers to travel and go to all of these places to compete so I feel like if I’m succeeding then I’m giving at least a little bit of something back to them.
