Derby athlete Piper Hula interviewed with VYPE to discuss her life.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goals for this year are to make it to state as a team and to get 19:30 for my 5k.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
The most fun I’ve had in the past year is on a trip to Tennessee I made with my family this summer. It was beautiful there with all the mountains around. We went hiking, saw the Ark and the Creation Museum, and went to my cousin’s wedding. I also got to hang out with all my family which was a ton of fun! I traveled to 9 different states many of which I’d never been to before.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
One of my favorite teachers is Mrs. Hackney my fourth grade teacher. She made learning a lot of fun and helped me through several subjects I was struggling with. Also, she did a lot of fun arts and crafts projects that made the school day more enjoyable.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
One of my favorite athletic memory’s is from my freshman year when our 4×800 placed at State. We weren’t supposed to place but we all ran super hard that race. It was so exciting to watch our team slowly move our way up and end up placing. Most of the relay team were seniors so it was their last chance to place at state. It was so fun seeing them so excited and happy.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
One teammate that has left a big impression on me is Lucus Kreutzer. I’ve run XC with him since middle school and he is probably one of the hardest workers I know, he pushes others to become better, and he is a great team leader. He leads by example which encourages me to work harder.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part about being on the XC team is definitely the community. I look forward to hanging out with my teammates, encouraging them, and being pushed by them to be better. I have made some of my best friends through XC.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
If I could go anywhere for vacation I would go to the mountains. I would take my family and we’d go hiking and camping.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
If I was given $500 and had to spend it in 24 hours, I think I would buy some new running shoes. Then with the rest I would give it to the team so someone else could also get new running shoes. They can be kinda expensive and nice running shoes really help you feel good while running especially when you’re doing so many miles a week.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
Outside of school I’m involved in the Derby 4-H club and my church youth group.
VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
I am involved with StuCo, NHS, and FCA. I’m involved with these because it’s a great way to meet new people and positively influence the school.
