Derby’s Mason Madrigal – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Door Rescue

by: Joanna Chadwick

Derby’s Mason Madrigal is this month’s athlete of the month.

The senior spearheads the Panthers sprinters as he runs the 100 meters, 200 and 400 relay.

Madrigal has known for years how fast he was, but five years ago he took the chance and started running track. And for him, it has been a steady climb ever since.

The Derby senior runs a 10.87 in the 100 and 22.54 in the 200.

He gives credit to his positive energy and work ethic pushing him to be great.

“I am always looking forward to tough workouts because I know it’s making me better. I love seeing my hard work pay off in competition,” Madrigal said.

After running indoor track for the Shocker Track club, the senior came into his senior outdoor season with the goals of running a 10.7 in the 100 and a 22.2 in the 200. But he has bigger goals than his times.

“I want to medal in all three of my events at state,” Madrigal said.

Madrigal knows what it takes to win.

“Each race I really try to focus on MY race,” Madrigal said. “I’m not worried about who’s next to me, I just try to stay extremely focused and relaxed.”

With that mindset he has separated himself and landed him the opportunity to run at Emporia State.

“It was really simple when it came to choosing Emporia State because the coaching staff is amazing and during my visit I really connected with some of the athletes on the team,” Madrigal said. “I really feel like Emporia State is somewhere I can grow and become a great sprinter.”
