Derby’s Haley McComb – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by WSU Tech

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My first goal this year is to graduate, of course, because I can’t get very far without that. My next goal would be to get my real estate license, which I’m already working towards right now while still being in school and having a job. I currently work at a property management company, and so I would like to start saving a lot of money this year and put it towards buying my own properties one day.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

If this question had been asked a couple of years ago and any other year besides this one, I would have had a lot to say. But honestly, this year has been the hardest year of my life. Of course, I still had fun moments, but I went through a lot of obstacles I wasn’t prepared to go through. I was at the lowest I’ve ever been this past year. I feel like it was like that for a lot of people, honestly. This year has taught me a lot, though. It has made me stronger and showed me that I could do it, even when I really feel like I can’t.

It has taught me not to give up and to always try to see the positive in things, even the smallest of things. And I’ve learned that even if it feels like nothing will ever get better, it will. You just have to hang in there and find the bright side.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher will always be Mr.Welch. He was my math teacher sophomore year of high school, and I have been his teaching assistant ever since. He was one of the few math teachers who never gave up on me and would always try his best to get me to actually learn, even though it would take me longer than others. He also knew I ran track and would ask me how my meets went every week. He was always very encouraging and helpful, no matter if it was about math, track, or my future.

I would tell him how I was interested In real estate, and he actually knew someone who would be able to teach me more about that. Which is actually how I got my job at the property management company. Even though those are two very different things, property management is helping me learn a lot of stuff that correlates with real estate. Mr. Welch is one of those teachers who makes a difference in these kids’ lives. Without Mr. Welch, I wouldn’t have had this whole new world of opportunities opened up to me.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory was probably my whole junior year of track. I ran the best I ever had. I received lots of medals and made lots of personal records at almost every meeting. Our relay team even made it to state. I also met my best friend that year on the track team, and she made my season the most fun it’s ever been. We would make each other laugh so hard, even during the really tough meets. Having her by my side made everything a lot better. It was a great experience getting to run at state, not only with my relay teammate but with my best friend right there with me.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Abby which is the teammate I had mentioned previously, left the biggest impression on me. She wasn’t just a great running partner; she was also my gym partner and best friend. We would wake up every morning at 5 am before school to work out and get into great shape for the season. We motivated each other to get better. She is still one of my best friends now that she’s moved away and off to college. Even though we don’t live close anymore, we still always try to see each other when we can and talk on the phone all the time. When I can, I still go to her meets and love to watch her run. I miss Abby; no one makes me laugh as hard as Abby.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part of being on the team was the relationships I made with people. I made my lifelong friend on that team. As far as my other teammates, there were lots of good people on that team. There were many sweet girls I met who I laughed with, and we all became supportive of each other. Whenever I was going through a hard time, a couple of them wrote me letters to check on me even when I wasn’t on the team at the time.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

If I could pick any place to go for summer vacation, I would pick Bora Bora. I’ve always wanted to go to a tropical place and stay in one of those houses on the water that you can look down on and see the ocean beneath your feet. The person I would take with me is my mom. She has always worked very hard her whole life and deserves a nice trip. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without my mom. She is always thinking of others and helping them out in any way she can, so I think a trip for her would be more than deserved.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

If I had $500 that I had to spend in the next 24 hours, I would probably invest it into something so it can be worth more in the future.
