The Derby athlete of the month is senior swimmer Will McCabe.
McCabe will go down as the most accomplished Derby swimmer in history.
McCabe, who owns five Derby swim records, is eager to vie for a championship in Class 6A in February. He plans to swim at Barton Community College after graduation in May and then transfer to a Division I college.
VYPE: How long have you competed in swimming?
McCabe: I have been swimming for about a decade now.
VYPE: Who inspired you to start swimming?
McCabe: My family. My sister first started doing it, and so I joined her.
VYPE: Do you swim for a club?
McCabe: I do swim club, and the team is the Aquashocks. I started with them and am still doing it.
VYPE: What is your favorite swim memory?
McCabe: My favorite all-time swim memory has to be the no rules laser tag game from my sophomore year of swim. This was very, very memorable but also was a tough choice for my favorite memory.
VYPE: What are your biggest achievements in swimming?
McCabe: I would have to be my first school record or the rest of the school records I have so far.
VYPE: What records do you have so far?
McCabe: 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 200 IM, 100 fly.
