Vivian Kalb is a senior at Derby High School and a member of the cross country team. Kalb started her official running career in the seventh grade, but she first got involved in the sport well before middle school.
“I did fun runs when I was in the second grade,” said Kalb. “I have been running with a lot of these girls since freshman year, so we have gotten really close. As we add new girls each year, we try to bring them into our family. We always push each other to keep getting stronger as a team.”
Every runner has their own routine and things they do prior to and during a long run. For Kalb, her creative side comes out when she’s running.
“I have a lot of creative energy on my long runs. I think about schoolwork and projects I might be working on. During competition, I try to break my race down into pieces and I think about when I need to start pushing myself more,” said Kalb.
Her longest race was a night race that was a 25K, which is just under 16 miles. Once she graduates from Derby High School, Kalb plans to attend college and she hopes to continue competing.
“I plan on going to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. I will be running cross country and track and majoring in Environmental Science,” said Kalb.
