Derby’s Chloe Johnson – Senior Spotlight – Presented by Hutchinson Community College

Chloe Johnson is a senior at Derby High School, where she competes on the Lady Panthers golf team. Johnson burst onto the scene as a freshman, placing high at regionals. Now she’s entering her fourth year on varsity, making it to state every year with her team since her freshman season.

“I love the tournament atmosphere and all the girls on the team,” Johnson said.
Coach Tim Herrs has seen Johnson refine her game heading into her senior season.

“Chloe has a lot of talent,” Herrs said. “She has a really nice swing, and she can play some great golf when she’s locked in.”

Johnson saw her confidence improve toward the end of her sophomore season. A season where she battled with inconsistencies but finished strong after shooting a 100 for the first time.

“At regionals my sophomore year, I needed a birdie to score a 100,” Johnson said. “I hit the almost perfect shot on my second shot, and I birdied the hole. It’s my favorite golf memory and one that made up for a down season at the time.”

Outside of athletics, Johnson is the president of the national honors society and is involved in student council. She also is going into her 15th year of dancing, where she used to do so competitively in tap dancing and clogging. Now, she teaches both types of dancing at her local church’s youth group.

Upon graduation, Johnson wants to study accounting and eventually attend law school. She also credits her parents, Jeff and Jan, for a lot of her success on and off the golf course.

“My parents have supported me with everything I’ve tried,” Johnson said. “And that really helped me to become the person I am today.”
