Derby High School senior McKinley Sinclair is heading into her final volleyball season with a clear mindset, by enjoying every moment and leading with purpose. As a setter, Sinclair plays a crucial role in the success of her team, and she’s focused on making this year the best yet, both on and off the court.
“My first goal this coming season is to have fun,” Sinclair says. “It’s my senior year, and I want to really enjoy some of the last times playing with these girls and playing volleyball overall.” In addition to soaking in the memories, she’s committed to strong communication with her hitters to ensure they’re set up for success each game.
One of the team’s main goals this season is unity. “We want to make each other better every day at practice and games, so it takes communication and teamwork,” she adds. The team-first mindset is something Sinclair brings into every practice and match.
In the offseason, she worked hard to improve her defensive skills and her ability to read the ball, preparing for fast-paced game scenarios. Her dedication paid off last year when she hit a major milestone, her 1,000th career assist, and earned her an AVCTL Division I Honorable Mention. “Those achievements made me want to work even harder,” she says.
Sinclair is especially looking forward to senior night and the energy of home games, playing in front of friends, family, and the supportive Derby student section.
Outside of volleyball, Sinclair threw javelin during track season and competes in club volleyball. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Kansas and study Diagnostic Science, with hopes of becoming an ultrasound technician.
