From Derby High School comes soccer player, Leo Fernandez. While on the field, Fernandez plays center forward or winger positions. Fernandez is proud to be a part of The Panthers and bragged about his team. “Ever since my freshman year, Derby has been a winning team and family. I hope now that as a senior I can help my teammates win and lead them to wins they will never forget.” This tradition of winning has been set earlier and for Fernandez, the goal is to win.
Fernandez doesn’t like to look ahead too much into the season. He likes to take it one game at a time, but Fernandez did share with Vype Magazine the biggest challenge he predicts this season will be the match up against Dodge City on October 1st. This will give Derby a chance to see how well they compete against quality opponents.
Showing up every day is a strategy Fernandez carried with him during the off season. “Something I worked on in the offseason was just consistency, showing up everyday, putting max effort into practice, and then coming back the next day.” Fernandez not only uses this thinking for practice, but it is true for all areas of his life as well.
Although Fernandez has several bragging rights from last year’s soccer season, his favorite accolade would be winning the AVCTL league outright. He was also named first team league honors, along with state and metro selection.
Currently undecided on a major, Fernandez would like to attend college for real estate or teaching. Fernandez also participates in STUCO events. This year Fernandez will get to kick for the Derby football team for Friday night lights.
