Derby’s Jaydon Carruthers is still relatively new to competitive golf, so he knows he still has a lot of work to do. Carruthers was chosen as the Zeka Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month. 

“It is an honor to be recognized,” Carruthers said. “It’s been fun to follow the different VYPE  polls and I have appreciated the community support. I am still relatively new to competitive golf and just trying to get a little better each round.”

With consistent training and lots of discipline, Carruthers feels prepared and ready to tackle any course or tournament. 

“I love the game and get on the course everyday,” Carruthers said. “I’ve focused on trying to be more strategic and setting myself up for the next shot. I’m lucky to have some great coaches and mentors in my life who have helped me become a more mature player.”

Carruthers and the Panthers have high hopes for the season, including a strong run in the postseason. 

“Our team is motivated and we have played a lot of golf over the last year,” Carruthers said. “We think we can challenge for a top spot at league, regionals and state. Personally, I want to be a more consistent finisher and take the next step with my scoring.”

While still figuring out exactly what he wants to do after high school, Carruthers hopes he will still get to continue doing what he loves. 

“Golf plays a big part in how I look at the future,” Carruthers said. “I’m exploring architecture and engineering programs where I can study golf course development and design. I’ll play as long as I can.”
