Q&A with Derby’s Camdan Cooper – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by WSU Tech

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My personal goals for the year are to grow my relationship with Christ, continue to get stronger in the weight room and begin pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University in the fall.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun I have had in the last year was being on homecoming court with my peers and football teammate, Samuel Same, this past fall. Derby’s student council planned a week full of activities for students and the court, and we capped the fun week off with homecoming game halftime recognition and a 28-21 win over Hutchinson.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher from any grade is my high school Pre-AP Calculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC teacher (Anita Curtis) because she always made math class enjoyable to come to and explained the material in a way that was able to be understood. She has always been supportive of my math and other academic endeavors as I continued enrolling in higher-level mathematics courses at Wichita State University as a high school guest student.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory is punting a career kick of 64 yards at the 2021 Kansas 6A State Championship game as the stadium cheered and roared.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me is Derby Defensive End, and Iowa State football commit Samuel Same because he is a student-athlete that really emphasizes the student part before the athlete. He is exceptional in the classroom while being an outstanding teammate and athlete in the weight room and on the football field.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part of being on this team is the culture of the Derby football program in its entirety. The One Degree Compass foundation focuses on four specific elements – accountability, character, energy, and service. The program is built around these core values, and nothing will replace the relationships built with teammates and members of the Derby community.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

If I could pick anywhere for a summer vacation, I would like to go to the U.S. Virgin Islands with my family to explore and enjoy their white sand beaches, national parks, and biodiverse reefs.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

If I was given $500 to spend in the next 24 hours, I would buy and hold stocks so that the investment would grow exponentially as time goes on.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

The clubs or campus groups I’m involved with at Derby High School are the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I am an active participant in both the National Honor Society and Student Council, and I’m a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
