Q&A with Derby’s Wyatt Jackson – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

Some of my goals for the year are based around my education. I am really working towards finishing my high school education with good grades at the same time as getting my associate’s degree at butler community college. Outside of that, I am striving to get stronger in the weight room and see improvements physically and try to heal my shoulder injury.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The main highlight of last year was having fun on the football field with my team. With it being my senior season, It was really important to me and the rest of my teammates that we have a blast the whole time and take in all the moments for what they were.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher has to be my math teacher Mrs. Robl. She truly made my day every time I walked into her class. Even though math was not always fun, she made everyone’s day better.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My all-time favorite athletic memory was my senior year when we were playing Lawrence in the playoffs, and it was pouring rain all game. It was supposed to be a tougher game, especially because of the terrible weather, but we were thriving and were making big plays left and right. It was the best game of football I have ever played.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Nathan Keener is one of my closest friends and has always been a brother to me ever since I moved to Derby. He has been a big part of my progress through high school and has left a big impression on me in the ways of how to go through life and how to handle difficult situations.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part was simply the brotherhood. Anyone who walked into our weight room or onto our practice field could feel the bond we all had with each other. There was nothing we all would not do for one another. We all wanted to help the team succeed. Everyone shared a common goal. WIN.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

I love spending time at the lake. I would be going to table rock. I am taking my family and my closest friends. Mitchell Johnsen, Nathan Keener, and Leshoan Davis.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

Easy, I am imminently using the money to help pay for current or future college classes.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I have previously helped with multiple community service projects with my team, and I am currently helping tutor kids at the elementary schools here in Derby.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I am a part of the Early College Academy program at Buttler Community College. I am doing this to get a jumpstart on my future. This gets me my associate’s degree by the time I graduate High school.
