With every intention to get back to the state championship game, a game they were one win short of last year, Derby’s nine seniors look to get over that hump.
“We have a very talented group of guys, and this year has the chance to be really special,” senior Saben Seager said.
Seager spearheads a talented bullpen once again with sophomore Colby Morgan, juniors Mitchell Johnson and Kade Sheldon and seniors Mercer Thatcher, Luke Westerman, Drake and Mercer Thatcher, Cayden Brown, and Clayton Knoblock.
Seager threw two no-hitters as a junior and quickly became one of the best pitchers in the state – with the accolades to back it up.
Seager was the AVCTL I pitcher of the year in 2021, as well as an All-Class 6A second team pitcher.
The accolades only fuel the fire that Seager plays with while on the mound.
“I feel like I am the best pitcher in the state and my job is to go out there and shut every team that I face down,” Seager said.
In his first 12 innings pitched, Seager had 19 strikeouts and two hits.
“I feel like what makes me so good at what I do is having a lot of confidence,” Seager said.
While Seager is one of the more versatile pitchers around with four go-to pitches he also is a very good hitter.
The senior is second on the team with 12 RBIs and is tied for second on the team with 14 hits.
